Review by JD on June 10, 2014.

The overall death metal scene has become a little predictable and stagnant over the last ten years plus. Certain acts within the community has been trying to kick start the scene into overdrive with a dizzying array of styles and forms. One such act has been doing this since hitting the metal scene. It is a doom act once called Eve Of Mourning. They changed styles since then and became the NYC based powerhouse called Grey Skies Falling. They're now rewriting the DM playbook.

With progressively amped talent that adds this fuckin’ wall of sheer brutality to the fold, Grey Skies Fallen seem to be putting themselves over and above the standard death metal pack. Blending solid musicianship, progressive lyrics and some of the heaviest metal riffs ever, it is a perfect work of chaotic art that makes your ears bleed.

Songs vary in intensity and speed, and never lose full on aggression. Heavy uses of doom, progressive metal with even some viking/black metal flawlessly mixed in and some nasty melodic death metal to finish it off. Look at songs like the slow crush of "Ritual Of The Exciter" or the Blackness inspired "Of The Ancients". Each song is well crafted to batter your mind but all can make you jump into the pit for a bout of death. Think a slowed down Death and Amon Amarth meeting early Cathedral and then adding in progressive elements – that is what you have.

Grey Skies Fallen is one of rare breeds of metal bands. The type that can write a new chapter in the annals of history and with The Many Sides Of Truth they have done that and way more. As a metalhead I can honestly say that this album is one of those watershed moments that will make an impact for many years – once it is heard and enjoyed.
