Fallujah brings the same ethereal atmosphere as their previous full length The Flesh Prevails to the table with their newest release. Dreamless. It has all of the gyrations of the previous album, but now features a longer runtime. Unfortunately, with all the depth, the album does not surpass its predecessor. It just doesn't have as many memorable elements to it and results in it being much more over-indulgent sounding and less tight than its predecessor.

The songs here are intricate, but we don't remember the best parts of them as easily as we do on The Flesh Prevails. The songs seem to become convoluted and don't have the immediacy that the predecessor had. This leads to long excursions of metallic bliss that are hard to memorize and form visible patterns for. The songs are still written fairly well, but the level of song-writing has taken a step down from the last album. This all leads up to an album that is a difficult listen and not as rewarding as it could be. The good news is that the shoegaze elements of the band are still interesting and lead to a great deal of payoff on the part of the listener. The songs are still very original sounding and one of a kind for a death metal experience. The freshness of the release has been diluted somewhat since the last album, however. There simply isn't that new feeling of listening to this style of this album anymore.

However, it is still a very cool sounding album and despite its flaws smokes most death metal on the market at the present moment. Just be prepared to be taken in by a similar and more challenging experience to the predecessor and you should like what you find on this recording. It is a deep and rewarding listen for those with patience.
