Review by Adam M on April 30, 2019.

Embrional have a distinctive grasp on the harder edge of death metal.  This music is really heavy and features enough intricacies to be interesting.  I found myself thinking of Necroticism by Carcass a few times when listening to this album, but this band really has their own sound going on here.  There are moments that are more pummeling, but then there are also portions where the band tries to be unique and goes off in different directions.

The songs are developped and compelling, but never become overly technical.  The song-writing here is actually fairly solid and the band’s crunching sound is able to make it’s way to you via some well constructed tracks.  The band makes use of some oddly harmonic sections to make their album sound even more evil and weird.  It’s certainly an interesting album and I found myself constantly compelled.  Still, there aren’t enough boundaries pushed for this to reach a higher plateau of death metal.  It sounds a bit generic at times, but the band is always putting together well formed songs.  The mood of the album is evil enough and you need to listen to the whole thing to get this feeling, because a taste of a track won’t suffice.  It’s really the continually changing songs that appeal to me more than the new Festerday, for example and let this one stick out from the pack.

It could use more originality, for certain.  There is a feeling that these soundscapes have been tread before even if in slightly different form.  This somewhat standard sound is what prevents this from truly being a great album, despite being solid in its own right.  Those looking for well-constructed death metal will be very pleased with Evil Dead and some might even rank it towards the top of the death metal heap from this year.
