MetalBite Review by Adam M on 5/16/2013
The Ocean uses the music atmosphere mapped by Cult Of Luna or Isis and it is very apparent in every riff they put together. The band has its own unique and brilliant sound, however, that can be related to the waves of the ocean.

Right from the serene introduction the band has the listener enraptured in the atmosphere and the cascading riffs of the second track 'Mesopelagic The Uncanny' take hold of your attention. There is a nice combination of clean vocals and Cult Of Luna-like barks in this song alone and it sets the atmosphere perfectly. The Cult Of Luna similarities donít end there, however, but the band places a different more ethereal atmosphere at every step. There is also a distinctive core influence in the riffs that recalls the likes of Converge. This aspect of the music gives the band the extra dimension they need to deliver a powerful and exciting collection of songs. There is a lot of variety to be found here in the textures of the outfitís music, which gives a distinctive appeal to every individual song. Previous listens to this band brought a more sterile view than the more potent, full of life view found with this album.

There are very few flaws to be found with the album as tight and powerful as it is. Perhaps fans of traditional metal might not like the innovative approaches of the band, but most people should get a fulfilling listen with "Pelagial". There are a lot of crescendos and cool parts to be found within the music of this band. Give them a listen and be awestruck. With lots to love and little to dislike, itís time to become submerged in The Ocean.
