Ghost Brigade brings an atmospheric aura that is shaded with a gray color. The style is not unlike that of the somber ones Katatonia. In fact, with a touch of melodic death metal present, it’s a very appropriate comparison with the Swedish masters of gloom. The songs here straddle the line between bleakness and melodic-ism in a fine fashion that is much welcome to me as this is one of my first exposures to the band.

Given that they are borrowing a lot of elements from other styles, it has also be credited to the band that they can create enough of a niche for themselves regardless. It’s even more appropriate because of the lack of purely atmospheric metal releases that have been released this year. The relatively nice production values this band has obtained at this point also helps the mood they are trying to invoke come forth with power and conviction. Musically, the swirling guitars converge in a pleasing fashion to create a sorrowful atmosphere. The vocals are actually weaker than the guitars and one of the only elements bringing the quality of this album down a notch. The sparse atmospherics create by the instruments certainly win out, however, and carry this worthy collection of songs. The third track 'Aurora' is certainly a highlight and encompasses the morose mood the band is trying to attain. Another moody wonder is the track 'Achored'.

Overall, the atmosphere is appropriate for the depressed vibe the band is trying to maintain throughout. Ghost Brigade has released an album that is a great replacement for output from the band Katatonia. In the future, it may be the case that these two bands will be directly competing with each other and that would only lead to better music for the listener. Of course, everyone can use a melancholy moment in their lives in certain situations.
