Review by JD on August 16, 2009.

Ignis Fatuus... I had heard of this Finnish band for awhile by now, and I was pretty much very sceptical with all of the praise that they were getting, to the point of not believing anything that was said. When I got the chance to review the band, I was glad to finally get an opinion all of my own to share. When this much hype is going on about one band in all of the metallic trades and stuff... I get both curious and sceptical at the same time.

I was surprised at what Ignis Fatuus was unleashing from the very second that the CD had started to pump out some very heavy and yet interesting music. It is a amazing combination of Brutal Death Metal that meets the technical brilliance of Yngwie Malmsteen while adding in a little twist of insanity just for the pure fun of it... pretty much explains what was coming out of my speakers.

Heavy to the maximum, yet having more talent than 90% of the bands out there... they combine to have lethal results. I have not really been this impressed in quite awhile... and I am truly impressed. Malmsteen usually bores me after awhile... IF kept my interest throughout the entire album. One listen to either ‘Traveller’ or the mind melting ‘Fall’... you will be more than pleased to continue through each and every song.

Looking up just what the bands name really meant, I was a little shocked. It means ’glowing gasses over a swampy area that light up, or something that is misleading’, which made me pause... it certainly does not fit the band. Ignis Fatuus do light up with talent, although not with swamp-gasses.. but they mislead no one. They deliver some of the most refreshing and punishing metal, and prove that sometimes the hype through the media is correct. I happily admit it!
