Looking back at a band through their previous releases will do many things in the review world. It shows what they were like, and how-if they had- grown as artists and may give a incite into what they might do in the future. I find myself doing this with German black metallists Old Pagan... and learning a hell of a lot in the process.
I had just reviewed Old Pagan’s "This Is Saarland Black Metal" and was very impressed and energized with the way that they had fashioned its raw and abrasive sort of BM into something that was both evil and stil art. Now, I am reviewing "Battlecrusier Old Pagan", an album that had been before they had released the "TSBM". They were a two man outfit on this one. Lets see what it brings to the table for all of us.
Right off... the barbaric nastiness is still there. Thirteen track of the best intensely savage and Satan inspired riffs ever to come out of a non-Norwegian BM Band. Nasty, unyeilding and bold, each track seems to live in that netherworld between Black Metal and torturous assaults of the mind quite well- the end results are that Old Pagan seems to reach out and hits you with every demonic riff and word that the conjure up. Many a demon will be resurrected with this album.
I recommend this album to any and all reading this musical rant. This is Black Metal that is the way it was meant to be: brutal, raw and uncompromising in every way, shape and form. Just go out and buy this album and you’ll see that I’m right.
