Skeletonwitch perform an aggressive, yet addictive form of thrash on their new album in style. This is a style that has an addictive feeling that is creating by catchy and repetitive riffing patterns. There are many moments on this album where one gets lost in the rhythm patterns that are created by the outfit. The speed of the tracks is hyperactive and relatively fast, leading to an exciting flavor to each track. The gruff vocals of the lead singer are harsh yet appropriate for the backing tracks that are represented on the album.
The overall impact of the band is made through many of the stellar tracks presented on Serpents Unleashed. Songs like "From A Cloudless Sky", “Burned From Bone” and “Beneath Dead Leaves” resonate with a fiery presence that are incredibly appealing to the listener. There are many quality tracks on this album, but none completely enrapture the person listening completely. This is because the band sticks to a relatively simplistic style, yet it is also one that is addictive and pure. If the band developed a more innovative approach in the future, it could lead to even more interesting releases.
As it stands, there is nothing but quality material to be found on Serpents Unleashed and it comes highly recommended to fans of thrash in general. Skeletonwitch unleashed one of the biggest surprises of the year with this album and it is a strongly recommended release.
