Moonblood plays metal, right? It is so strictly reduced to the essentials that one can only wonder that there are still a few differences between their single songs. But they exist, even if they are hard to find. Anyway, Moonblood is like a synonym for the most positive type of predictability. They always deliver the same. Hysteric vocals with a lot of reverb on it, endless lo-fi guitar lines, a production some demo bands would be ashamed of, and an omnipresent, raw, and bestial atmosphere one cannot ignore. From time to time, the guitar sounds totally crude, just check out the hardly endurable line at 3:40 in “Slave of Eternity (Nachzehrer)”. But usually, Moonblood is able to create an unexpected beauty in the aura of absolutely devilish music. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the aforementioned track shocks with naked cruelty and utter repugnance. But it is also almost logical that many exciting parts underline the well-known finding that the musicians of Moonblood were true magicians. I have no other explanation for why the approach never changes, but my level of excitement for it never decreases.

Okay, both tracks were originally released as demo songs, and this alone makes the release a tough job for many maniacs. I agree: the drum sound is shit. Especially the bass drum produces a rather ridiculous noise. By the way, is there a bass guitar anywhere? But all these objective deficiencies cannot destroy the aura of Moonblood’s offering. Quite the opposite, they are more or less an essential part of the whole thing. Moonblood loved to shit on all conventions, and they did it so passionately that one can still smell the stench. Their acoustic ugliness can be called legendary.

Although the title track of this two-piece EP with aplaytime of more than twelve minutes is definitely less strong than their absolute highlights like “My Evil Soul”, this release shows once more that they left an enormous hole after their departure back to the caves where they once came from. And I may not forget to praise “Slave of Eternity (Nachzehrer)” one more time. After its short, mild intro, it belongs to the most diabolical tracks in a band’s catalogue, which is filled with diabolical tracks to the brim; a truly demonic and, despite its dubious production, fascinatingly intense piece. The beast-without-beauty artwork, I guess we can say hello to Quasimodo, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, completes the output perfectly. As always, when I listen to Moonblood, I am impressed because their music catches the numinous spirit of black metal like hardly any other band does as well.
