Threshold brings that progressive edge to the table. The production on this album is huge and lets the album breathe nicely. The sound of the album is more modern in aura and brings a punch to the table that shows off this modernity. It nicely makes use of a double album format to deliver wads of progressive metal to the audience.

The crystal clear sound of these songs simply adds to their pristine nature. There is a certain flair to the sound that Dream Theater has in common with the band, though I wouldn’t call these acts overly similar. Instead, Threshold offers their own unique sound which has more in common with prog rock perhaps than Dream Theater does. The work does get a bit of a boost from being a double album. This allows the band to explore more textures and styles. It means there is more variety for the overall scope of sounds, which is a very welcome thing. Not only that, but there is a larger amount of variation in the dynamics. See The Shire (Part 2), which starts out in a very subtle mood that contrasts nicely with other emotions the band develops on the disc. There is a great deal of feeling put into these tracks and it shows through nicely. Legends of the Shire really has an artistic feel to it that bypasses what typical prog metal would have to offer. Still, I can’t help feeling that the songs still feel underwhelming for some reason. Maybe it’s because the style has been done before, but the album simply doesn’t resonate as much as it could.

Still, this is a very strong double album of progressive metal that should appeal to most fans of the genre. There is so much on offer here that it’s difficult to pass it up.
