The Bleakness Of Our Constant
Review by Adam M on January 2, 2019.
Eneferens is a band that performs a very atmospheric take on black metal. The music is almost shoegaze in style with a very beautiful tone to it. There are a degree of dynamics that make the music so emotionally charged. Songs like Amethyst are wonderful to behold and wrap a warmness around the listener. The music is sort of similar to Agalloch, though has a more black metal aspect to it. It all leads to some beautiful tracks that are drenched in a very positive and upbeat mood. In fact, the music is even more positive than the likes of Agalloch and it makes for a heartwarming feeling.
The amount of changes the songs undergo could be seen in a similar light to Opeth. In fact, some of the greatest mood makers really are comparison points for this album, as are Alcest. The palette is very strong and moving on the album and it makes for a vibrant listen. If there is a fault to the album it is that similar music has been performed before, but this takes the atmospheric black metal to a whole other level. The songs usually stick to a mid tempo and this is appropriate for the warmth the band is trying to exude. The really have a shoegaze feel although they belong to the more general genre of black metal. This album made me feel good and this is a credit to the entire production as a whole. It’s not anything mind-bendingly original, but it is different enough to gain momentum.
Bands have attempted mood setting works before, so this falls a bit short of the best of Opeth, for example. It is still a very high quality album that is one of the better ones of 2018. Though this will appeal to black metal fans it is those that look for a pretty mood to their music that will find the most to like with this release.
