This album was interesting in that it brought a groove metal aspect to the band and changed their sound in a compelling new direction. It is a groovy album, but also features a lot of interesting dynamics to make for a very well-constructed work. The songs are more similar to a Machine Head type of material. This is an intelligent and well performed work that is necessary to the band’s development and also perhaps the last great album they made.

In terms of musicianship, there are down-tuned guitars that form the backbone to the music and are very resonant. This is also a nicely produced album, with nicely done drumming and vocals that are harsh and appropriate. All in all, it is a very tight and well-oiled machine of an album that is very entertaining.

In terms of flaws, the album does not have the abrasive nature of a Beneath the Remains that would liken that work more to a Reign in Blood type of work. It is thus not the most interesting album they ever created and takes a backseat to other works. Still fans of the groove metal style will find this one of the better albums to be found in the style.

In conclusion, fans of the outfit and groove metal will find something to enjoy here and lap up this material. It is simply well done and one of the stronger albums of the type. It is a well-conceived and performed gem of a work that will find its way into a Sepultura and groove metal fan’s heart.

Sure its difficult to follow up an album like Arise, but if that is what you are looking to try to do then I am not sure what the band was trying to say with this release. Sure it has its heavy moments especially with songs like Biotech Is Godzill, but anyone with the copy saying Epic Records might have an idea of what I am talking about. This is the same band we know and love; however, much has changed within the unit. They have added more diversity within their song structures and have started to experiment with a bit more down tuning. It also seems that the band is straying in a hardcore/metal type direction as well. Nonetheless this another Sepultura cd of pure metal quality. It may not be as intense or brutal as Arise but it is still pretty good. If you are a Sepultura fan you owe it to yourself to get this cd!

Bottom Line: If you are a Sepultura fan you probably already have this. Give it a listen if you are up for some experimental thrash/metalcore from Brazil's finest.
