A colourless artwork, splatter vinyl, and an inner sleeve that screams "Hail the Underground!!!". Ideal conditions for the celebration of an unholy black metal feast. Consequently, Necrohell from Greece jump headlong into a sound of misanthropic grimness. As the artwork suggests, the duo is influenced by the works of the Norwegian pioneers. From this follows that ice-cold leads and hateful, raw vocals characterise the album. Necrohell do not look out for new paths through the snow-covered fields of the black metal area. They have realized that the tried and tested route still has a lot of previously undiscovered insidiousness to offer. Now you know what you can expect.

Experiments? No. Innovation? Completely unknown term; what does it mean? Atmospheric interludes? Never. Necrohell just race down the black metal highway and give full speed. Any form of ritualistic ingredients, sometimes widely spread on Greek black metal works, is missing. Instead, the album title is well chosen, because Necrohell use every opportunity to show their bad mood while neglecting every other emotion. These dudes are truly possessed by the subgenre sound of the early nineties, and the production supports their musical rigidity. This is not to say that "Possessed by Nocturnal Grimness" sounds like "Under a Funeral Moon Part II". Fortunately, one listens to a more professional, dense, and shattering sound. As often happens, the bass guitar did not gain a prominent role, but the guitars and the constantly nagging vocals, which are equipped with a proper amount of reverb, are well balanced. By the way, the vocals of the closer should be mentioned, because they hail from Mayhem's Attila.

Main man Ungod wrote all songs, and they cannot hide the fact that they all fell from the same womb. Indeed, variety is written in small letters, and the different tunes are not as different as one would perhaps assume. But let's put it in positive terms: Necrohell have found their style. The pretty long songs are based on the endlessly flowing guitar leads; the drums are responsible for the necessary dynamic and provide a reasonable number of tempo changes while each and every single track is convincing. (As mentioned before, they are just slightly interchangeable at the end of the day and it is difficult to identify an outstanding tune.) In rare cases, the drums want to leave a more or less extraordinary mark, for example at the ending of "When the Shadow Brings Cold", where the guy behind the drums discovers his cymbals. But all in all, these details are not crucial. Necrohell has just written a really good, albeit not outstanding, album. It delivers rapid, pure, and generic black metal which expresses a clear musical vision and enthusiastic passion. Finally, the back cover says "Winds of Funeral Embrace Us Eternally". What more do you need?
