This album was very strong and one of the better melodic death metal platters to be found. It is a classic melodic death metal platter that has the right amount of melody to catch your attention. It is also a very classical type of work for the genre because it has a feel that is reminiscent of the very best Viking type melodic death metal platters. The music is epic in scope and very compelling.
In terms of musicianship, the album is very solid with punishing guitars and a very tuneful feeling to it. There is very little to fault with the vocals as well as they are huge and fit nicely atop of the rest of the instruments. The production is crisp and nicely backs up the remainder of the music. Overall, this is a very sweet and melodic sounding recording.
The flaw of the album lies in its use of repetitive types of structures to get its point across. It is not particularly innovative and uses aspects of metal that have been pushed to the brim in other recordings of the band. There is nothing particularly amazing that has an advantage over Twilight of the Thunder Gods and this is simply another good recording from the band.
All in all, this was an enjoyable album that lacked the major pull to make it extraordinary. For the melodic death metal genre, this is still a strong and worthwhile recording that has the right ingredients to be an entertaining and significant album in the genre. People that like other bands that are heroic like Ensiferum will find a lot to like here.
