This is a straightforward album that has the characteristics of an epic, but is held back by some predictable musical usages. The whole affair is a rollicking endeavour, but lacks some of the memorable moments of some of their other albums. There is a dark flavour to the album is interesting. The music is good and melodic and has some positive traits.
The musicianship is solid with cascading guitars and a penchant for melody that is altogether interesting and makes this a worthwhile listen. There is a variety of moods on the disc, but it remains relatively dark and moving music. The musicianship here is certainly solid.
The problem I’m having with the disc is that it is not as compelling as Damage Done and falls short of that album in terms of overall scope. It is more of a straightforward listen that does not have that album’s poignancy. Still, there are many memorable moments and this is solid stuff.
The overall view I’m having with the disc is that it is one of the better albums by the band and a very fun and involving listen. People looking for something revolutionary will be left wanting, but those looking for another solid album by the band will be satisfied.
