This is a great sludge record with the sounds of the south entranced in it. It has the right flavour to be a classic album from the genre that has influenced some other bands and made a name for itself. The whole work is one of the most drudgy albums you shall hear, but also has an ability to be motivational and this is shown through songs such as “Temptation’s Wings”.
The musicianship on the album is good with a solid singing performance from Phil Anselmo. This makes the work fun to listen to and certainly something to be looked up to for fans of the sludge style. The guitars are dreary and make for a very moody listen overall. The entire thing is very catchy and has the ability to draw the listener in.
In terms of flaws, the album loses some traction when compared to the album Blind by Corrosion of Conformity. There isn’t anything to really stand out and make this a superior album to that one in any way. It is still very catchy and features a number of memorable moments. There isn’t anything to make it an immortal listen, but it is still a fun and addictive effort.
Fans of bands like Crowbar will find a lot to like here as the album has the right flavour to make for a very entertaining listen. It is one of the premier sludge type albums to this day and highly interesting. It comes recommended to fans of the genre and those looking for something grimy and that has the ability to draw you in.
