And just like that, faith in death metal restored… In the wake of some of the worst mainstream death metal albums to have ever been released by some of the genre’s most celebrated bands, it’s no wonder why we turn our ears toward the hallowed underground where TRUE death metal forever reigns. Throughout these horrid corridors and into the terror of blackened aggression unimaginable do we venture now to the maledictive sound of Autopsy, “Necroticism” era Carcass, Vital Remains and Archgoat-worshipping black/death metal as realized by murderous hordes like Nevada’s Ancient Malignity who’ve removed from their caches for immediate discharge their sophomore Dehumanization Dawn weapon of an LP, scheduled for an October 1, 2024 execution via Inhuman Assault.
Have we forgotten why we black/death metal? I think the whole premise behind why this genre took form to begin with has become lost. The movement began much like the second-wave Scandinavian black metal scene of the late 80s - early 90s in that it was set into motion as a catalyst for the desecration of sacred things and for the defilement of decency. The real shock and awe of it all waved bye-bye a long time ago and death metal overall has become a novelty much like today’s teenager as she sports her, A Nightmare on Elm Street, shirt whilst engorged in her “Appetite for Destruction” cassette… It just doesn’t hit anymore. And so long as “legendary” death metal bands (Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Deicide, Malevolent Creation) continue to manufacture their plastic records as opposed to a real artisan’s approach, ie, Scott Burns and Randy Burns of “Legion” and “Scream Bloody Gore” fame, it’s open season for black/death hordes like Black Witchery and of course Ancient Malignity here whose MO is to threaten and to oppose the old fashioned way, through the music of a most intimidating consort: Tsjuder, “Pentagram” era Gorgoroth, Urgehal, Blasphemy, the aforementioned Archgoat, and Acheron - only the most bastardly black and death metal influences to inspire these miscreants…
Dangerous… Like back in the day dangerous the way death metal is meant to be, but lost has been this way as no one knows how to approach the concept. Better to just be dangerous than to try and capture that essence under guise, right? The music does the talking here: 'Pedoswine Obsolescence' in its putrid gore-grind Carcass era repugnance - maligned riff upon maligned riff - repetition like a thorough and efficient stabbing or a triple-tap 9MM use of deadly force. And engineering? Like it was put together in a serial killer’s Red Room; meticulously arranged and with much attention to each gruesome detail, from the heart-pumping thud of the kick-drum like the sonic foundation to an adrenaline-fueled nightmare, the ominous chainsaw-like roar of the guitars and the muffled-like-a-duct-taped-whore atmosphere that overwhelms and suffocates with every passing second. Some would call it “old-school”, but I just call it the only fucking way to do it…
'Dystopian Subjection' - a cleansing through discipline as tortuous riffs mold you into something less than human: lick the boot, bitch, this is degradation-level punishment, like a curb-kicking or that electro-shock scene with the gnarly Asian dude in Lethal Weapon (Film 1987). Just disturbing shit like what used to actually make people very uncomfortable back in death metal’s glory days, but not the bathing in your mother’s guts stuff, more like some kind of murderous black/death militia - packing hot desert artillery and blowing shit up the American way… HEAVY as fuck extreme metal and complete with all those super-cool unpronounceable song titles, but don’t expect anything cliche. Dehumanization Dawn - a new breed of death metal album; one that brings the hate and the nightmare fuel in gallons; dumping it over you like gasoline and not even fucking teasing you, just lighting your worthless ass on fire without so much as a second thought… Murderous, riff-driven black/death playing in the background… Bloody basement death metal, bury'em somewhere in the desert under coyote moon while you’re trashed on cheap whiskey death metal - madly aggressive, Dying Fetus meets Kanvass (BR), sub-militant, execution-style black/death worship. You bring the guns, I’ll bring the booze…
