Oh gast, ic þe onrǣde, ālīef þē and bring us plæge and feferhīe swefn!!! Emmm, sorry, listening to Drudensang makes me feel in a mood to use some old languages such as old English. Okay, to make it a little bit easier, I will write in modern English from now on, at least I try.

So here we have the new EP by the Bavarian black metal occultists Drudensang who have a penchant for old German and some spooky ghost stories. And what is to say about that EP? Well, it is a very atmospheric and ghastly piece of music with a very good feeling for creepy melodies and vocals.

They are more roughly whispered than sung and so the lyrics come over in a very sinister and mysterious way. Somehow you always have the feeling that vocalist Krámpn is permanently trying to evoke some dark creature to do their evil work in the realm of the living flesh. Need an example apart from the very devilish artwork?

"Ich bin die Kreatur, die dich zerfrisst
Ich bin der Dämon in deinem Schädel
Ich reite deine dunklen und kranken Gedanken"

which means in English

"I am the creature that corrodes you
I am the demon in your head
I ride your dark and morbid thoughts" (taken from "Offenbarung Der Lvzier")

Quite scary and kind of evil, isn't it?

Also the keyboards make a large contribution to this dense and spooky atmosphere. Sometimes I feel very much reminded of the reference works of Emperor (which of course is "In The Nightside Eclipse" and not that crap that came after this album) or the first three Satyricon albums. Maybe you hear any similarities to "Mother North" in "VVydargaenger". This one also has some really cool, almost classic heavy metal-like guitar solo.

The guitars are peppered with a lot of tremolo picks and repetitive riffs. The band never gets caught in some wild and rabid outbreaks but focuses more on some mid-tempo songs which are, even though there are a lot of keyboard parts, quite catchy and groovy. Sometimes even acoustic guitars (like at the beginning of the title track) are used to strengthen that very special atmosphere.

With Geysterzvvang the Bavarian necromancers have created a very nice EP that gives the listener a fantastic throwback to the mid-90s. What is a great pity though is that the guys just have recorded an EP (okay, "Pure Holocaust" or "Reign In Blood" were even shorter though) and not a full-length. And what in my opinion is a little bit annoying, too is the last track "Miasma" which is just an outro. Another real song would have been much better (or maybe to be a little bit more stringent both, intro and outro).

But okay, that's complaining on a very high level. So if you want to listen to some really eerie music (maybe during a nice walk through the darkness to scare you a little bit more), this album is the perfect thing. By the way, the video for "Blutkreys Teufeley" is a very cool visual implementation of their music.

Spiritus obscure, te quaeriums. Te oramus, nobiscum colloquere, apud nos circita. Oh no, it starts again….time to leave now!
