If you like filthy, disgusting death metal that comes with a sheen of sleaze, Voidhämmer of Long Beach is for you. Maybe it’s the foetid sewer slather of the guitar sound, could be the palpable crust influence at work here, but one thing is for sure: the members of this fine ensemble arise from the portion of society known as the unwashed, and they should be warmly welcomed with their miasma of various odours inherited from Scandinavian and British forebears.
This four-song debut EP gives off an aura similar to Venom’s "Possessed", however, these dudes are way more Nihilist than the evil Englishmen. There are d-beats aplenty to be had here, but there’s also a furious double bass assault coming from drummer Shane Bogdan. The guitar tone is comparable to the classic Sunlight sound, only dragged through a swamp of bloated corpses. Truly repulsive. The aptly titled 'Rotting In Excrement' gets the putrefaction process started with some grinding blasts beneath vocals reminiscent of Grave’s Jorgen Sandstrom, but when they slow it down to half-time is where things become quite succulent, if you relish the flavor of rotten flesh.
There are several occurrences of rather massive riffs throughout this mini-album, and while 'Phosphorized' starts out with punk-encrusted fury, it eventually crushes your balls with some 32nd note double bass devastation underneath the general putrescence. Bogdan excels with colorful ride and china cymbal accents as he pummels away. Closing track 'Coffin Leakage' is the most ferocious formation to be found on the record, as the crust influence is most apparent on this one. Don’t let the driving first riff fool you, Voidhämmer have taken their lessons from the likes of Discharge and Motörhead, only to befoul the punk vibes (apparently this is possible) with a penchant for the usual suspects from the early 90s Swedish scene.
