Review by Michael on June 8, 2026.

So, here we are with the debut album by Sinistrous Mist called "A Voice Through Constellations". Like a storm front moving towards you, the intro in "The Flag Of The Inverted Cross" instantly grips your interest. And what comes after that also: furious black metal with hateful vocals (probably the voice through constellations) and ripping guitar riffs.

If I didn't know that Sinistrous Mist are hailing from Greece I would have never located the guys there (okay, if you hear the accent in some parts, you might assume it though). They sound quite harsh, merciless and blasphemous and remind a lot of some Scandinavian melodic black metal stuff back from the 90s.

What is remarkable, is the balance between furious blackish outbursts, especially when it comes to vocals and the calm keyboard parts. "Divine Black" is a good example here and quite often I get reminded of the ferocious "Toteslaut" by Swedish Nastrond if anyone has these guys still in his or her mind.

The compositions are, even though it is extreme metal, more likely structured like a classical composition with a climax where you can find a very elaborated peak in the song and here and there you can hear some classic compositional elements.

Personally I think that the album is a good start for a new band although it is quite tough to get noticed these days in the melodic black metal scene with bands like Worm, One Of Nine or Stormkeep who have released very good albums lately. The production is somewhat low-fi, not too polished and quite rough which brings over the harsh atmosphere of the music quite well. Nevertheless the music is quite upgradable.

What is a point of criticism on "A Voice Through Constellations" is the little bit one-dimensional approach they have in the songs. There isn't too much alteration in the six songs, everything follows a little bit the same approach and also the playing time of the songs could have been a little bit more tightened. A little bit more variation in the song structures and in the vocals would have been quite good so that there were some more recognition value in them.

Another thing that upsets a little bit is the cover artwork. AI is quite a nice tool for some things but since I am a traditionalist and adore artworks from albums like "Clandestine" or "The End Complete" from real artists, I don't think that it is such a good idea to use it for the creation of cover artworks. This will never offer the real value of an album – just think about "Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz…" with an AI cover artwork.
