And from the darkest past of the Singapore old school extreme metal underground comes storming: Nuctemeron! A raw and fiercely aggressive black/ thrash band that only released a couple of demos in days long gone by, and collected here for everyone's listening pleasure on this compilation, titled "Procreator Of Sin".
Let me get right to the point: this kicks so fucking much ass! Musically, this band takes pretty much all its cues from the earliest releases of bands like Sodom, Minotaur, Slaughter (CAN), Bathory, Messiah, Sepultura, and the true Mayhem. The guitars have all the delicacy of drilling a hole in the wall, while sounding like it, too, getting spurred on by a drummer who speeds through the frenzied blackened thrash on offer, utilizing a simple yet highly effective and energetic battering approach. On top of this comes a helping of evil croaking and screaming vocals, bringing to mind the vocal stylings of the late Quorthon on albums like "The Return" and "Under the Sign of the Black Mark", and in doing so being the perfect fit for the abrasive high-speed thrash the band belts out. As tradition dictates, the band also drops in the necessary lead work, being of an order that is not high on the subtlety scale, but prefers to race over the fretboard like the Roadrunner on meth. This is barbaric and very primitive stuff, delivered with a frenzied and deranged energy throughout. Variation isn't really a big thing here, with the gentlemen involved opting to simply beat the listener around the head with insane speed and demented delivery, simply exuding manic force while doing this. The band remained staunchly committed to the frenzied black/thrash sound all through their recording history, although on the final two cuts, the band also gets something of a Cryptic Slaughter vibe going, mainly because of the relentless delivery and aggressive cawing vocals. Yeah, if it's primitive aggression you want, look no further than this.
You don't really need me to tell you that this stuff sounds unpolished and raw. Despite being actual studio recordings with no rehearsal or live takes, these still sound pretty grainy and unhinged throughout. On the first four tracks, which are their first demo, the guitars have a grinding sound, and the drums are mostly reduced to a snare drum getting mercilessly assaulted, with the vocals placed well in front, as if the guy is shouting straight into your face. On the tracks following (demo #2 and a couple of unreleased ones), the whole gets a bit more body and balance to the instrumentation, thankfully without chipping away at the demented vibe that this band emanates, because this music has no need for any polish or flash whatsoever. It's the kind of production job that is definitely not suited for those with delicate ears, but for this type of evil psychotic battering, it is nigh-on perfection.
This is great, simple as that. Even if the sound is far from perfect and as raw as your teen brother's dick after finding out who Angela White is, you can still clearly hear the passion and intent that have gone into the music, and that alone makes this a compilation worth cherishing. Add to that the raging intensity and remorseless hammering delivery and speed of the music itself, and you just know that this is stuff that is to be held in the highest regard by any and all who proudly fly the flag of true old school underground spirit.
