What makes "Vision Beyond Form" a spectacle isn't its sheer aggression, but how Wingless wields their brutality with melody, catchiness, and occasional unorthodox instrumentation. It's a brutal album, sure, but I think its crowning achievement is its versatility. The riffage on songs like "Proclamation Of The Void Star" is satisfyingly technical, and there's drumming on songs like "Will Is The Law" that displays an exceptional understanding in creating sick progressions. As a product, every minute of this album counts – I had a sincere sense of anticipation waiting for the next switch-up.
The clearest influences present are those of Dead Congregation, Immolation, and possibly Morbid Angel's later work (though I view this album as better than the latest MA release). There's a cavernous atmosphere in places, but the overall sound remains fairly clean – cite the technically advanced guitar solos persisting throughout the album. The drums are pummeling and precise, and they get ample time to shine on the opening of several songs here. Listen to the first thirty seconds of any track on "Vision Beyond Form" and tell me that Wingless doesn't set a tone unique to that track.
Clear consideration was put into the track listing here. The songs that rev up and simmer down, like "Whispers", come at very opportune times. I would personally put "The Gnosis Of Decay" first instead of concluding the album with it since it's the fastest and most technical track, but I still see the vision. Lastly, I love the vocals on this album – the Immolation influence is clearest here, even though Wingless has more range to offer in this regard.
