For this pummeling split, two relatively new bands brimming with potential come together to deliver what I consider their best work to date. Hemorrhoid, a gore-infused deathgrind band with a modern take on the genre, and Sequestrum, a cavernous goregrind outfit in the vein of Undergang, are both bands with plenty to offer.

One of the best things about this split is that, despite their vastly different production styles, Hemorrhoid and Sequestrum complement each other remarkably well. Their overall approach and vibe fit together beautifully, not to mention their shared commitment to bringing a modern sound to a style that has become somewhat saturated. Hemorrhoid kicks things off with a less abrasive sound and cleaner instrumentation, while Sequestrum follows with a swampy, downright “wet” production style. That said, Sequestrum sounds less raw here than on some of their previous releases. The closing track, 'Hematic Orifical Exploit,' ends with some badass guitar work that relies less on distortion, making it my favorite track and arguably the most dynamic moment on the entire split.

Hemorrhoid’s second track, 'Desecrated Cavity,' is groovy and borderline catchy, making it my second favorite song here. Their side of the split does exactly what it sets out to do, delivering a tight, focused collection of tracks that favors precision over atmosphere. Still, Sequestrum takes the crown for me. I’m a sucker for bands that sound like they recorded their albums in a sewer and know how to combine the filthy aesthetics of goregrind with the sheer impact of death metal.

All things considered, this is probably my favorite split of the year. These two putrid bands are absolutely worth keeping an eye on, and diving into their still relatively short discographies is a must.
