There is a epic tone to this album and it marks one of the stronger entries of the band and somewhat of a timeless classic. It is certainly consistent all the way through and has addictive numbers like “Revelations” and “The Flight of Icarus”. There is a highly motivated feeling to most of the songs on this album and it shines through again and again.
The musicianship on the work is strong with huge sounding guitars highlighted by a very pristine tone. The production on the album is adequate and good for the time period produced. The vocals are of a high pitched register and match the songs quite wonderfully. The entire affair is catchy and memorable in equal measures.
In terms of flaws, the album does not contain the progressive flavour of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son for example and comes a bit short compared to that album in the forward thinking stakes. It is more interesting than their first couple albums, however, and a memorable addition to their catalogue. Fans of The Number of the Beast and Powerslave in particular will find something to like here.
In conclusion, this was a highly interesting and nicely crafted album that remains one of the high points for the band. Fans of their early material will certainly find something to like here as will fans of exciting traditional metal in general. Definitely give this album a listen.
