Review by Adam M on May 30, 2011.

Kvelertak has enough energy and charisma to carry forth their rocking sensibilities. This self-titled album is like a more metal version of AC/DC. The riffs on this release bleed with energy and jubilation. While these may not be the most complex, layered tracks you’ll ever find, the music is able to come forth and have a great impact. Similarly, the vocals, while not in immediately understandable English, are bellowed with such intensity that one can’t help but take notice. Hooks abound on this self-titled release. Look no further than the opening cut 'Ulvetid' the storming 'Blodtorst' or the thrilling 'Ordsmedar Av Rang' for some highlights.

It’s really the quality of the power of the almighty riff that is emphasized on this release. In terms of musical classification, there is a definite Hardcore influence that is combined with Folk in as energizing a manner as possible. The best complement I can give to the sound this album achieves is that it makes the listener have fun and that can be a very important thing in music. This self-titled work isn’t perfect, however. The songs can get a bit grating, but keep the rollicking flavour for the majority of time. The groove that the guitar riffs always elevates the songs into memorable territory, regardless.

This is one album that should be played with the idea of fun in mind and one will have a much better experience with the recording. It’s hard to determine whether this band is Metal or Hard Rock, but the purity of spirit shines through in either case. Kvelertak is one of those albums you just want to rock out to and not think too hard about. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable work that overflows with energy from start to finish. That the band makes the whole work so consistently enthralling with such a simplistic style is a credit to their talent.
