Live Review - Deicide, Ressurected - Krefeld Kulturfabrik - 8/13/24

A very severe thunderstorm invited the around 200 fans quite early into the Kulturfabrik and soon the atmosphere was quite tropical in the hall. Maybe not the best requirement for a brutal death metal evening but nevertheless Resurrected started quite well. The band had almost a home match because they come from Krefelds neighbor town Duisburg and so they had a strong support with them that evening. That day they celebrated more or less their 30th anniversary (they already released 7 full-length albums) and introduced their new guitar player Christoph, who did their first gig with them. Although their style of brutal death metal isn't too much my cup of tea, they did a really good job. Playing some sort of death metal like Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse (whom I both really adore) they often incorporated more brutal death metal elements (especially the drumming) into their songs. Don't get me wrong, this isn't bad but at least for me after three songs a little bit too monotonous. But most of the guys in front of the stage liked it and that's the major thing!

After a short break chief Satanist Glen Benton and his comrades entered the stage. Having a great new album (with a shitty cover) on board they only played two songs from that. If you have ever seen Deicide you know that they actually don't live from the show but from their music. Glen probably had reached his daily number of steps already since he didn't move too much. But Kevin and Taylor, who obviously is already fully integrated into the band since he came in last year, did a fantastic guitar work and not to mention Steve's drumming. He was more the calm anchor, as always. And he was a little bit grumpy, too. When a guy yelled that they should play a fast song now, he called that guy a moron and said that he would cut off three songs off the setlist now and nobody would care because he would still be paid. I really had to laugh hard then. But apart from that the sound was cool and the choice of songs, too although I missed 'Dead But Dreaming'. Only the light was a little bit too reddish so that it was quite hard to make good pics from that show. Closing with 'Homage For Satan' that evening was far too soon over.

Setlist: When Satan Rules His World / Carnage In The Temple Of The Damned / Bury The Cross / Behead The Prophet / Once Upon The Cross / From Unknown Heights / Sacrificial Suicide / Satan Spawn / In Hell I Burn / They Are The Children Of The Underworld / Sever The Tongue / Scars Of The Crucifix / Dead By Dawn / Homage For Satan

MB Premiere and Review: THORN - 'Xenolith Of Slime'

Underground death metal heroes THORN conjure up their third full length which is easily their most mature and immersive one yet. They've elevated their unique style of barbaric old school death metal blended with emotionally-charged atmospheric parts which very few bands are able to pull off convincingly.

Thorn's songs on this album are quite dissonant and diabolic in terms of their riffing, frequent melodies and solos, deep guttural vocals with harsh backing vocals, and dynamic drum work that often does double-bass drumming, blast beats and very slow-paced mid-tempo. The riffing in particular has a very dirty and savage style with the tight guitar playing of either tremolo picking or down-picking, blending with the drums to create some eerie and morbid atmosphere which feels like your impending doom awaits. On top of that, the guitar melodies and solos add another dose of creepiness to that omnipresent dread and horror which has been with us from the very beginning. The guttural vocals are very thick and strong in terms of their execution, fitting wonderfully with all that instrumental work, but they also provide a very unusual feeling to that already impending doom as if you're being stalked by a hideous eldritch beast that will devour your body to the bone. Read full review here.

MetalBite is proud to present new track 'Xenolith Of Slime' from the upcoming THORN's new record Evergloom coming out this September 15th, 2023 via Transcending Obscurity Records. This bludgeoning dose of death metal should appeal to music fans of Desecresy, Intestine Baalism, Edge of Sanity, Desultory, Fumes.

MB Premiere: BLACKEVIL - 'Praise The Fire For The Sacrament'

Today, in cooperation with Dying Victims Productions, we are thrilled to present the new track 'Praise The Fire For The Sacrament' from Germany's BLACKEVIL highly anticipated third album, Praise The Communion Fire For The Unhallowed Sacrament.

Hailing from Bavaria, BLACKEVIL have been forging fire since 2013. Now, with third album Praise the Communion Fire for the Unhallowed Sacrament, BLACKEVIL take bolder steps into the epic that they only hinted at prior. If its predecessor began to transcend "blackthrash" categorization, Praise the Communion Fire wholly does so, canvassing a wider range of other stylistic sizes – late '90s melodic black metal, same-era blackened death, early '80s epic metal, and even a bit of NWOBHM that preceded that – that altogether result in something that's more unique than ever. The album's runtime of 46 minutes across seven tracks no doubt suggests that turn toward the epic, and the songwriting indeed goes everywhere but still with remarkable focus. Their chops, while thankfully evincing a human touch, support these daring constructs with finesse and a finely honed clarity. Leads and otherwise-more-melodic riffs lead the charge into the battlefield, buttressed by dynamics that are never boisterous for their own sake; rather, they're reigned in, allowing those riffs and rhythms to breathe, thus making the surges of energy all the more exciting. Put another way, BLACKEVIL aren't just another black(ened) metal band flying off the rails, imparting one extreme expression after another: there's actual class and craft at work here, honoring the ancient lore of heavy metal whilst adding to its lexicon. In that sense, the ceremonial reverence they exude truly supports the title Praise the Communion Fire for the Unhallowed Sacrament.

Forever Baptised in Eternal Fire reaped acclaim, but still left BLACKEVIL as a well-kept secret. Again blessed with (un)godly art by the masterful Paolo Girardi, Praise the Communion Fire for the Unhallowed Sacrament should once and for all establish BLACKEVIL as top-tier heavy metal blacksmiths!

BLACKEVIL is:

Abyss - ghoulish throat of revenge and roaring 4-string hell
Deathinfektor - attack of the iron six-string saw
Bloodhammer - glorifier of the infernal wardrum thunder
